Description U.S. Springfield model 1871 chambered in .50-70 Government with a single shot rolling block capacity and a 36″ round barrel. Dated to 1872 marked on the left side of the frame with with Eagle “U.S. SPRINGFIELD 1872”. The right side of the frame is marked “MODEL 1871”. Blued barrel, ram rod, barrel bands, frame, block, hammer, and trigger. Adjustable rear ladder sight and fixed front blade. This rifle has the New York State style safety system, that requires that the hammer be re-cocked after the breech block is closed. Smooth wood forend and straight stock with blued metal butt plate. The right side of the wrist of the stock is stamped with a ESA cartouche in an oval border. The butt plate tang is stamped with “US” and both of the barrel bands are stamped “U”. Comes with a triangle socket bayonet. Antique ships directly to MOST buyers homes. Condition: Antique Good/Very good having been mostly reblued with viable buffing marks and wear under the finish. The finish shows scratches, contact marks, and general handling wear. Varying spots of finish patina/discoloration. Most of the metal stamping are still crisp, but the Eagle marking is faded from being buffed. The stock appears to have been sanded and refinished with the cartouche being still visible but faded. Some light scratches and contact marks on the wood. Metal oxidation on the butt plate. The rear sights screw is marred from improper tool, and the rear ladder sight has a bend to it. The bore is bright and clean with strong visible rifling. The bayonet has heavy metal oxidation and patina.
