Description American Machine Works Smith’s breach loading carbine chambered in .50 caliber. This example with three digit serial number 828 and what appears to be a rack number 277 features a 21-5/8″ half round to octagon barrel, dovetailed front blade, dovetailed flip up rear ladder sight, case hardened receiver with saddle ring, case hardened hammer, blued trigger guard, and hardwood stocks with steel butt plate. The left side of the frame is marked “SMITH’S PATENT JUNE 23, 1857”, “ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMBLE / BALTIMORE U.S.A.” and forward of that is marked “MANUFACTURED BY / AM N M SH N WKS / SPRINGFIELD MASS”. The stock bears the “JH” inspector cartouche on the left side of the wrist and “JH” on the underside of the forearm. The left side of the barrel is stamped “LFR”. Antique ships directly to purchaser. Condition: NRA ANTIQUE EXCELLENT with all original parts and 90% plus original finish with sharp lettering. The stocks show some light and scattered marks from handling.
