Description Relic lantern from the wreck of the U.S.S. Maine. American, ca. 1898. On February 15, 1898, the U.S.S. Maine exploded in Havana Harbor, killing 260 men onboard and kickstarting the Spanish-American War. In fact, the most famous slogan from the war remains “Remember the Maine!”. This lantern is accompanied by a provenance tag, reading “Relics from the Battleship Maine Presented to Gouverneur Morris Chapter, D.A.R. by U.S. War Dept. Procured through the efforts of E.D. Basset.” Lamp was likely taken between 1898 and 1910. Lamp is in relic condition, with patina and heavy dust.
